Few things ruin a game or a movie night faster than a spinning circle on your Fire TV Stick. The good news: most Firestick buffering comes from a handful of causes you can fix yourself in a few minutes. This guide walks you through them in order, from the quickest checks to the last-resort reset.
Quick fixes to try first
- Restart your Firestick and your router. This solves more buffering than anything else.
- Test your speed. You need about 5 Mbps for Full HD and 15 Mbps for 4K on a single screen.
- Clear the cache of the app that keeps buffering.
- Move closer to the router or switch to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band.
- Plug the Firestick into the wall power adapter, not the TV’s USB port.
Why Does a Firestick Buffer?
Buffering happens when video cannot download as fast as it plays. On a Fire TV Stick, the usual reasons are:
- Slow or unstable internet, especially during busy evening hours.
- Weak Wi-Fi because the stick sits behind the TV, far from the router.
- Low memory or full storage from too many apps and cached files.
- Outdated software or a misbehaving app.
- Heat or low power, which make the device slow down.
Work through the fixes below in order. Test your stream after each one so you know what solved it.
1. Check Your Internet Speed
Start with the numbers. Open the Silk browser on your Firestick (install it from the Appstore if you do not have it) and go to fast.com, the free speed test run by Netflix, to see the speed your stick is actually getting.
| Video quality | Minimum speed (one screen) |
|---|---|
| HD (720p) | 3 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | 5 Mbps |
| 4K Ultra HD | 15 Mbps |
These are the speeds Netflix recommends, and they are a good baseline for any streaming service. If other people in your home are streaming, gaming or on video calls at the same time, you need more. We suggest at least 25 Mbps for a busy household.
If the test on your Firestick is much lower than what you pay for, the problem is likely your Wi-Fi, not your internet plan. Our guide What Is IPTV? The Complete Guide for US Cord-Cutters explains internet speeds and home setup in more detail.
2. Restart the Firestick and the Router
A restart clears memory and resets the connection. It takes one minute and fixes a surprising number of problems.
- Restart the Firestick: go to Settings, My Fire TV, Restart. You can also hold the Select and Play/Pause buttons together for about 5 seconds.
- Restart the router: unplug your modem and router, wait 30 seconds, then plug them back in. Wait until the lights are steady.
- Open your app and test the stream again.
3. Fix a Weak Wi-Fi Signal
A Firestick hides behind your TV, which is a poor spot for Wi-Fi. To check your signal, open Settings, Network, highlight your network and press Play/Pause. If the signal is not rated “Very Good” or “Good,” try these steps:
- Use the HDMI extender that came in the box. It moves the stick away from the back of the TV and improves reception.
- Connect to the 5 GHz band if your router offers it. It is faster and less crowded than 2.4 GHz at short range.
- Move the router closer to the TV, higher up and away from thick walls, microwaves and cordless phones.
- Disconnect devices you are not using, since every device shares the same connection.

4. Use a Wired Connection
If Wi-Fi stays unreliable, a cable is the most dependable fix. Fire TV Sticks do not have an Ethernet port, but Amazon sells an Ethernet adapter that plugs into the stick’s power port.
Check which adapter fits your model before you buy. As AFTVnews reports, Amazon’s newer USB-C Ethernet adapter only works with the Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Gen), where it is limited to about 480 Mbps. Older sticks use the micro-USB adapter.
5. Clear Cache and Free Up Storage
Apps store temporary files that pile up over time. When a Firestick runs low on storage or memory, everything slows down, including video.
- Go to Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications.
- Select the app that buffers.
- Choose Clear cache. This is safe and does not remove your login.
- If the problem continues, choose Clear data. You will need to sign in to the app again.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use to free up space.
Amazon explains both options in How to Clear App Data and Cache on Fire TV.
6. Close Apps and Turn Off Autoplay
Apps that keep running in the background use memory and bandwidth.
- Force stop apps: in Manage Installed Applications, select an app and choose Force stop.
- Turn off home screen autoplay: go to Settings, Preferences, Featured Content and switch off Allow Video Autoplay and Allow Audio Autoplay.
- Using a VPN? A VPN adds an extra step to your connection and can slow it down. Test your stream with it turned off to see if it is the cause.
7. Update Fire OS and Your Apps
Updates often include performance and stability fixes.
- Go to Settings, My Fire TV, About.
- Select Check for Updates, then Install Update if one is available.
- Update your streaming apps too. If one app keeps freezing, uninstall and reinstall it.

8. Keep Your Firestick Cool and Powered
- Use the wall adapter. A TV’s USB port often does not supply enough power, which can cause slowdowns and restarts. Plug the stick into the power adapter that came with it.
- Give it air. A stick squeezed behind a hot TV can overheat. Use the HDMI extender to move it into open air.
- Let it rest. If the stick feels hot, unplug it for a few minutes before you try again.
9. Lower the Video Quality
If your connection cannot keep up with 4K, drop to Full HD or HD in your app’s settings. A steady 1080p picture is far better than a 4K stream that stops every minute. You can switch back when your connection improves.
10. Last Resort: Factory Reset
If nothing else works, a factory reset returns the Firestick to a clean state. It erases your apps, accounts and settings, so try every step above first.
- Go to Settings, My Fire TV.
- Select Reset to Factory Defaults and confirm.
- Set up the stick again and install only the apps you need.
Firestick Buffering FAQ
Why does my Firestick keep buffering with good internet?
The most common reasons are a weak Wi-Fi signal behind the TV, low storage or memory, and background apps. Check your signal strength in Settings, clear the app’s cache and restart the stick.
Does clearing the cache delete my apps or logins?
No. Clear cache only removes temporary files. Clear data is the option that signs you out and resets the app.
Is Ethernet better than Wi-Fi for a Firestick?
Yes. A wired connection is more stable and is not affected by walls or interference. You need a compatible Ethernet adapter for your Fire TV Stick model.
How much internet speed do I need for a Firestick?
About 5 Mbps per stream for Full HD and 15 Mbps for 4K. For a home with several devices online, aim for 25 Mbps or more.
Why does buffering get worse at night?
More people in your home and your neighborhood are online in the evening, so speeds often drop. Restarting your router, using 5 GHz Wi-Fi or a wired connection can help.
