“Jailbreaking” a Firestick sounds risky and technical, but it is neither. It simply means changing one setting so your Fire TV can install apps from outside the Amazon Appstore. This guide explains what jailbreaking really is, whether it is legal, how to do it in a few minutes, and what changed with Amazon’s new rules in 2026.
The short version
- Jailbreaking a Firestick means turning on “Install unknown apps”. Nothing is hacked or modified, and you can switch it off again at any time.
- It is legal to install apps on a device you own. What matters is what you watch with those apps.

What Does Jailbreaking a Firestick Mean?
On a phone, jailbreaking means breaking the manufacturer’s software locks. On a Firestick, the word is used much more loosely. It refers to sideloading: installing an Android app (an APK file) that is not listed in the Amazon Appstore.
Amazon builds this option into Fire OS. You do not need special tools and you do not change the system software. The whole “jailbreak” is one switch called Install unknown apps.
Is It Legal to Jailbreak a Firestick?
Yes. You own the device, and installing apps on it is legal. The same is true for the tools people use, such as the Downloader app, which is available in Amazon’s own Appstore.
What can be illegal is how an app is used. Streaming movies, shows or live TV from sources that do not have the rights to them is copyright infringement, with or without a jailbroken device. A good rule: if an app offers every new movie and every premium channel for free, it is not a legitimate source.
What Changed in 2026: Amazon’s New Blocking Rules
Amazon has tightened its rules on sideloaded apps, and it is worth knowing before you start:
- Piracy apps are blocked. In late 2025, Amazon confirmed to AFTVnews that Fire TV devices will block apps identified as providing access to pirated content, using a list maintained by the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE).
- Blocking now happens at install. Since January 2026, 9to5Google reports that flagged apps are stopped during installation with an “app installation blocked” message.
- Other sideloading still works. Amazon told AFTVnews that sideloading non-piracy apps will continue to be allowed.
In practice, this means the setting described below still works on Fire OS devices, but apps on the blocklist will not install or run.

How to Jailbreak a Firestick, Step by Step
The process takes about five minutes and uses the free Downloader app from the Amazon Appstore.
1: Install Downloader
- From the home screen, open Find and select Search.
- Type Downloader and select the app by AFTVnews.
- Select Get or Download.
2: Turn on Developer options
- Go to Settings and open My Fire TV.
- If you do not see Developer options, open About, highlight your device name and press the select button 7 times until you see “You are now a developer.”
- Press Back. Developer options now appears in the menu.
3: Allow unknown apps (the actual “jailbreak”)
- Open Developer options.
- Select Install unknown apps.
- Find Downloader in the list and switch it ON.

4: Install an app
- Open Downloader and enter the web address of the app’s official download page.
- Download the APK file, then select Install and Open.
- Back in Downloader, select Delete to remove the installer file and save storage.

How to Stay Safe with a Jailbroken Firestick
- Download only from official sources. Get each app from its developer’s own website. Random “APK download” sites often host modified or infected files.
- Do not buy “fully loaded” Firesticks. Sticks sold pre-loaded with apps can contain malware, and you have no idea what was installed. Buy a new stick and set it up yourself.
- Allow only the apps you need. The “Install unknown apps” permission is granted per app. Leave it on only for Downloader, and turn it off when you are done.
- Skip apps that promise everything for free. They are the ones Amazon blocks, and they are the most likely to carry ads, trackers or worse.
- Keep Fire OS updated. Updates include security fixes.
What to Install Next

How to Undo It
There is nothing permanent about a Firestick “jailbreak.”
- Go to Settings, My Fire TV, Developer options, Install unknown apps and switch Downloader OFF.
- Uninstall any app you no longer want from Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications.
